THERE ARE MOMENTS THAT JUST CHANGE EVERYTHING.

For music fans, some moments were so huge that they’re still relevant decades later. The Beatles on Sullivan. Dylan going electric. And of course, there was Woodstock. Even now — maybe especially now — Woodstock still has meaning. Its mix of music, culture, and idealism resonates across the years. It gave youth a voice. It changed the music business and it energized activists. From stadium shows to the #MeToomovement, it still echoes 50 years later.

The program is built around the experts and memorabilia at the Bethel Woods Museum for the Arts, on the site of the festival. We examine three aspects of this world-changing event:

  • A festival is born: It took an incredible combination of vision, tenacity – and luck – to pull it off. How did such an unprecedented event come to be, especially after the original location pulled the plug with just four weeks to go?
  • The bands: Woodstock was a defining moment for artists like Carlos Santana and Jimi Hendrix; but there were A LOT more bands on the bill. Dig into the famous, the forgotten (Quill, anyone?) and the weird (yes, ShaNaNaplayed Woodstock).
  • The legacy: From technological advances that enabled future mega-shows, to the validation of Youth Culture to the social advocacy, Woodstock helped set changes in motion that are still rippling five decades later.
